Take a Deep Breath Instead of Lighting a Cigarette. Part 1

How is your breathing? This may sound like a silly question, but your answer may reflect the level of well-being and health that you experience in your life. We all breathe, but few of us who are raised in a western culture are ever taught the benefits or techniques to care for our breathing.

I think that it was ironic that, when I smoked, I used to inhale my smoke more deeply than I inhaled air. I believe that, at some unconscious level, I was attempting to use my breathing to cope with the stress and frustrations in my life through my smoking, but by that time I had also become severely addicted to nicotine and the smoking habit. I believed that the smoking was a better self-management tool than my breathing, but I was very wrong.

Breath not only gives us life, it also gives us health, relaxation, energy and creativity. Air is the source of our life force while we still have physical bodies. It is the primary “food” of the body; without it, we can have organic brain damage within 10 minutes.

Breathing is the mechanism within our bodies that lets us take in life-giving air. Breathing is both voluntary and involuntary. You breathe whether or not you are conscious of the action.

Your lungs are large, pyramid-shaped organs in your upper torso, made up of masses of spongy tissue. They are the largest organs in your body, extending from the top of your shoulders to the bottom of your rib cage, resting on your diaphragm. Feel the perimeters of the bottom of your rib cage with your hands. Your lungs take up most of this space. Your rib cage is perfectly designed to accommodate the expansion and contraction of your lungs and to protect them from harm.
