How to Get a Cheap Oil Change Without Getting Ripped Off Post 1

by on Apr.01, 2011, under Entertainment

Modern cars are getting so reliable that if your car has less than 70,000 miles on it, it probably only needs to be taken to a repair shop for a tune-up and checkup every 20,000 miles. That leaves one itch to scratch: oil changes.
We’ve put our opinions of “how often oil should be changed” at the bottom of the page, but no matter whose opinion you follow, oil needs to be changed a lot more often than once every 20,000 miles!

The solution is obvious: you just whip in to your local quick lube shop for a $10.99 oil change.

Not so quick. Reading the rest of this page could save you several hundred dollars over the next couple of years.
This is how quick lube shops make their money.
1. Hang out a banner advertising $10.99 oil changes.
2. Pull in the car, start changing the oil, and then check the coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, clutch fluid, and power steering fluid.
3. Then the “service manager” (salesman) comes to the waiting room and tells you that you need the following X services as well, or terrible things will happen to your car.

Does this work? Sure does. There’s one large quick lube chain we know where the average ticket is $65.00 … $54.00 more than the customer thought they were going to pay.

How to protect yourself: LIE! Yes, put on your best worried look, and say, “Oh dear, well, there’s nothing I can do about that now, my credit card is maxed out.”

Sure, you can just tell them “No” – but they’re trained to argue. At best it’s a hassle. If you don’t have the money, there’s not much they can say. A few real SOBs will suggest you write a post-dated check, but the answer to that one is, “No way! That’s illegal!” (Which it would be, if you really didn’t have enough in the bank to cover the check.)

Is it moral to lie? In this situation: absolutely. We, the editors, absolve you of any and all guilt.
