List the goals under the category heading on separate 3-by-5-inch cards. State the goals in complete sentences as if you had already completed them.
According to Carol, the use of the present and past tenses is a potentially powerful strategy in that it creates the sense that the action, state of mind, or practice is already in process or accomplished. This can direct movement toward the goals and help to short-circuit self-perpetuating, nonproductive practices or habits.
She offers some examples:
Category: School
I feel good about getting As and Bs my freshman year.
I can take pride in getting up for school each day this year without having to be nagged by my parents.
Category: Family
I am really glad that I took the time to play with my younger sister because she needs her older brother to talk things over with.
