I was in a daze as we packed and drove for my postoperative visit. We played the Keali’I Reichel tape as we passed vineyards and golden-green pastures. I wept with joy at being able to see the cattle and horses. I will never forget that magical morning. Now I knew how my patients felt about being able to see without glasses or contacts. He could not believe how well I was doing – 20/20 in each eye and able to see J1. We bid farewell until January, when we would speak on the same panel at the Hawaiian Eye Conference and Visx University. (continue reading…)

The ring was positioned and the suction started. I felt the mildest pressure and saw the micrikeratome traverse back and forth. When the flap was lifted, the circle of light and the blinking diode became fuzzier, but were still visible. He started the laser, I was able to maintain my gaze, which is a major concern. I could actually see the diode become clearer. I knew I would be under the laser for more than 90 seconds and mentally geared for it. The smell was familiar to me. Ginseng

Ginseng is a perennially top-selling and heavily romanticized herb. However, its reputation is based more on lore than on science. While animal studies suggest ginseng may indeed possess some intriguing properties deserving the name “adaptogen” (see “Ginseng and Its History” for a definition), this herb has no properly documented clinical benefits. Hepatitis A
Not yet widely used but this vaccine is safe in young children and can be given to infants at risk for hepatitis A. This type of hepatitis is actually more common than hepatitis B which your newborns are already getting vaccinated against.

We are now using a vaccine that essentially takes the risk out of the pertussis portion by making it “acellular” hence the new acronym DaPT or acellular DPT and you might recognize this from your 18 month old’s booster record because it isn’t really new.
