1. Student bank accounts tempt students by offering free cash, music vouchers or railcards. Choose the one that gives you the largest interest-free overdraft instead.
2. Make sure you have ample supply of condoms, an electric blanket, an alarm clock and map of the town.

3. Resist the temptation to go back to mummy and daddy and your friends back home for at least a month.
4. Get in with the Student Union either by joining a club or society (a great way to make friends with similar interests) or by getting to know the SU President. Your involvement will be particularly handy for gaining free passes to see bands.

5. You’ll probably be short of cash so check out jobs at the university. These include bar work in the Student Union or library work.
6. If you have a car charge your friends for driving them to clubs and shops. If you have a computer you can type assignments or CVs up for a fee. You can even offer a cleaning service for students expecting a visit from their parents. Advertise your services on University noticeboards and in SU magazines.

7. Never take dirty dishes to bed with you (even if he is the SU president).
8. Work out from the start a rota for buying electricity cards, cleaning etc with your housemates.

9. Suss out the local clubs and go to them on student night when drinks and entry is cheaper. Most cinemas offer student reductions too.
10. Make friends with a ‘keen’ student on your course. They will be valuable when you miss lectures and need to copy notes.

11. Don’t rush to the bookshop to buy all the books on your reading list. Share books with others on your course or check out ads for cheap second hand copies on noticeboards.

12. Use the Internet for project work. It’s often free in Universities and will give you almost every bit of research you need.

13. Cooking with friends will cut your food bills. Remember vegetables are five times cheaper than chocolate and will keep you energised for those crazy parties.
14. Your student years will fly by – enjoy every minute!
